Bluesky has no native GIF download button — just like it has no native video download button. But GIFs are public media files, and saving one from any public post takes about 30 seconds with BskySuite. Here's exactly how to do it, including the differences between native GIFs and embedded Tenor or Giphy GIFs.

Quick answer: Copy the post link → paste into BskySuite → click Download GIF. Works on any device, no account needed.

Step-by-Step: Download a GIF from Bluesky

1

Copy the post link

On bsky.app, tap the three-dot menu (⋯) on the post that contains the GIF and select Copy link to post. On desktop you can also right-click the timestamp and choose "Copy link."

2

Paste into BskySuite

Go to bskysuite.com, paste the post URL into the input box at the top, and click Get Media. BskySuite fetches the post via the AT Protocol API and detects all attached media — including GIFs.

3

Download your GIF

You'll see a result card with a download button for each media item in the post. Click Download GIF (or Download File if it's stored as an MP4). Your browser saves the file directly — no watermark, no account needed.

Understanding the Two Types of Bluesky GIFs

Native / Uploaded GIFs

When someone uploads a GIF file directly to Bluesky, it's stored on Bluesky's CDN. BskySuite fetches it the same way it fetches images and videos — directly from the CDN URL embedded in the post's AT Protocol record. You get the original file, no conversion needed.

Tenor and Giphy GIFs

Bluesky's GIF picker inserts GIFs from Tenor. These aren't stored on Bluesky's servers — the post record contains a link back to Tenor's CDN. BskySuite detects this link and presents it for download. You'll be downloading the GIF directly from Tenor's servers, so quality is identical to the original.

Note: Some Tenor GIFs are delivered as MP4 for efficiency. If your download arrives as an .mp4, the content is identical — you can convert it to .gif using a free tool like ezgif.com if you need the GIF format specifically.

Downloading Bluesky GIFs on iPhone (iOS)

iOS Safari doesn't auto-save files the same way Chrome on Android does. After BskySuite shows the download button:

  1. Tap and hold the Download button (don't just tap)
  2. Select "Download Linked File" from the popup menu
  3. The GIF saves to your Files app → Downloads folder
  4. To move it to Photos, open Files, tap the GIF, then tap Share → Save to Photos

Using Chrome on iPhone is easier — it downloads automatically to your camera roll in most cases.

Downloading Bluesky GIFs on Android

Chrome on Android handles downloads automatically. After tapping the download button in BskySuite, you'll see a download notification at the bottom of the screen. The file saves to your Downloads folder and is accessible in your file manager or gallery app.

Samsung Internet browser users: tap the download button, confirm in the popup, and the file saves to the Download folder in My Files.

Downloading Bluesky GIFs on Desktop

On Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on Windows or Mac, clicking the Download button in BskySuite triggers an automatic browser download. The file appears in your Downloads folder. On some systems the file saves as .mp4 — rename it to .gif if you need the GIF extension, or convert it via ezgif.com.

Common Problems and Fixes

The download button shows a video, not a GIF

Bluesky stores many GIFs as MP4 video for better compression. The file plays identically to a GIF. Convert it at ezgif.com → Video to GIF if you need the .gif format.

BskySuite says "no media found" on a GIF post

Make sure you're pasting the post link (from the three-dot menu) rather than the profile URL. Some embedded GIFs from external sources may use formats the AT Protocol doesn't expose directly — try right-clicking the GIF on bsky.app and choosing "Save image as" as a fallback.

The GIF is low quality after downloading

BskySuite delivers the original file from Bluesky's CDN — no quality reduction happens on our end. If the GIF looks low-res, it was uploaded that way. Tenor GIFs in particular vary widely in resolution depending on which size Bluesky's picker selected.

Can I download GIFs from private Bluesky accounts?

No. The AT Protocol does not expose media from private accounts or locked posts. Only public post media is accessible.
